Catnip is actually from the Nepeta genus of plants—there are about 250 such species of plants in the family Lamiaceae. The name “catnip” comes from the effect these plants have on cats—they act as a pleasant stimulant to the cats’ pheromonic receptors. Typical behavior of adult cats exposed to catnip includes the cat pawing at the catnip, rolling over it, chewing it, licking it, leaping around it, and purring! Some cats will even meow or growl continuously! Thankfully the effects only last for a few minutes.
