Replace your bar magnet with one of your horseshoe magnets; is the concentration of iron filings different? Or this - Alnico Horseshoe Magnets can lift three times more than a bar magnet of the same size and weight. The bar magnet and small horseshoe in your kit are about the same size and weight.
