Adult belugas are pure white. But a newborn beluga is pale gray, and then turns dark blue or brown after a month. As the baby grows, its color fades. By its third birthday, the young whale turns pale gray again. It won’t turn white until its six years old. Scientists use these color changes to estimate the age of individuals in a herd.

The closest social relationship between belugas is the mother-calf relationship. Nursing times of 2 years have been observed. Calves often return to the same estuary as their mother in the summer, meeting with their mother sometimes even after becoming fully mature.
