The birth is often assisted by two dolphin “midwives” (which may be a male), who sometimes tug on the newborn’s tail to aid in the delivery. Then the midwives swim together to guide the calf to the surface for its first breath of air. The average gestation period for a bottlenose dolphin is 12 months. The young live closely with their mother for up to 6 years; the males are not involved in the raising of their mother's subsequent offspring.
