The gray whale travels between feeding and breeding grounds yearly. It reaches a length of about 16 meters (52 ft), a weight of 36 tons and an age of 50–60 years. Gray Whales were once called Devil Fish because of their fighting behavior when hunted. Before laws were passed to protect gray whales, they were hunted almost to extinction. Now, more than 21,000 gray whales live in the costal waters of the north Eastern Pacific Ocean. Gray whale calves are born in warm, shallow lagoons in Mexico. A calf stays close to its mother, sometimes swimming onto her back. The calf grows quickly, nursing on up to 50 gallons a day of its mother’s rich, high-fat milk.
