The Lava Lamp was invented in the 1960s by an Englishman named Edward Craven-Walker.  He got the idea to create the lamp based on a contraption he saw in his local pub.  A novelty item that is generally used for decoration versus illumination, many have associated the Lava Lamp with the psychedelic era of the 1960s.  How does it work? The lamp contains either an incandescent bulb or halogen lamp that heats a glass bottle containing water and a mix of wax and carbon tetrachloride.  A wire coil within the lamp aids in suspending the wax to create blobs.  Wax becomes fluid when heated, so the heat in the lamp causes the wax to ascend to the top of the lamp. That's why these lamps look SO cool when heated!  This is a great version of the Lava Lamp that can be used in your teenager's bedroom or to add a cool, hip decoration to a college chemistry classroom setting.  Highly recommended as a unique holiday or birthday present, and definitely a must for the old-school psychedelic fan in your family!
