Agate is a microcrystalline variety of quartz (silica), characterized by its fineness of grain and brightness of color. Although agates may be found in various kinds of rock, they are classically associated with volcanic rocks but can be common in certain metamorphic rocks. It was actually given its name by a famous Greek philosopher and naturalist. Theophrastus discovered the stone along the shore line of the river Achates sometime between the 4th and 3rd centuries BC and called it agate. They are characterized by their successive bands of colorful layers. Many mythological traditions believe that agate can cure the stings of scorpions and the bites of snakes. Other beliefs suggest that agate can soothe the mind, prevent contagion, still thunder and lightning, promote eloquence, secure the favor of the powerful, and bring victory over enemies. I purchased the Amethyst chunk for my daughter's Christmas stocking and chose the blue Agate for my son's stocking. It is a beautiful piece with a smooth finish. I would love to see what the purple and pink look like! Great product--never disappointed with Xump!
