Agate is a variety of crystal that is generally characterized by its brightness of color and fineness of grain. Found in various types of rock, they are most known to be found in volcanic rocks. Agate forms when gas bubbles trapped in cooling lava become filled with alkali and silica-bearing waters, which then consolidate into a gel-like substance. The alkali reacts with the iron in the surrounding lava, and bands of the resulting iron hydroxide are created in the gel. The bands are left intact after the gel loses water and solidifies. This is why many agates, when cut into cross-sections, revealing amazing stripes and designs. Resistant to acids, they have often been used to make mortars and pestles to crush chemicals. These beautiful stones have also been used throughout history for ornamental and decorative purposes—so why stop now? These GORGEOUS bookends are actual agate slabs that have been cut and polished for your bookshelf use! Just put books between each end to both hold books in place and accent your normally drab bookshelf with an original and natural piece of art. The insides of the agates can be clearly seen, and the ends have been kept in their natural state, showing that these are true agate pieces. This is a unique gift that is both scientific and stunning in form. We highly recommend this item for Mother’s or Father’s Day gifts, holiday gifts, or for your favorite co-worker!

Please be aware that this is a natural mineral and as such each piece is one of a kind! The one you receive may not be exactly the same as those pictured but it will be similar. Photo shows pieces for demonstration purposes only. Price is per each set. They come in irregular shapes, sizes and weights. Average size of each piece in the set is between 3-6 inches in height.

NOTE: This set of bookends is in its natural color----we cannot guarantee what shade of colors will be featured in each piece. Size and weight of each set varies--we cannot guarantee what size will be sent to customer.
