Gypsum sometimes occurs in rounded shapes called rosettes or desert roses. These are typically found as deposits in sedimentary beds. Gypsum is a soft mineral, No. 2 on the hardness scale or 1-10 used by geologists. It has many commercial uses, including making of plaster of Paris.
