This classic device is used to demonstrate the conservation of mechanical energy. When the wheel is rotated by hand to the top and released, its potential energy will turn into kinetic energy (rotation) as it falls. After the wheel reaches its bottom position, the kinetic energy will change back to potential energy when it moves up again. This process will continue on until the total energy is lost due to friction.

We are doing an 8th grade STEM project about transfer of energy, and we have learned much from Maxwells Wheel. One of the strings was broken when it arrived, and so we tied it together. BIG mistake. We learned many important lessons about the role the string plays in keeping this in motion. They can't wait to try and build one themselves to apply the lessons they've learned.
