Ammonites are arguably the most widely known fossil, possessing a ribbed spiral-form shell. They belong to predators known as cephalopods, including living relatives such as the octopus, squid, cuttlefish, and nautilus.
Ammonites are excellent index fossils, and it is often possible to link the rock layer in which a particular species or genus is found to specific geological time periods. They lived from the Devonian period up until the catastrophic extinction event that wiped out the dinosaurs in the late Cretaceous period.
This authentic ammonite fossil makes a great addition to any fossil/rock/mineral collection and looks great in the classroom. Have students pass it around, study its markings, and draw what they imagine the creature might look like. It also makes an inexpensive gift, stocking stuffer, or fun and unique party favor!
