This unit is effective in helping students understand the function of a dielectric and the build-up of static electricity. The inner and outer metal conductors are separated by a plastic insulator cup. These pieces slide easily in and out of one another. The inner conductor may be removed and the charge measured. When the conductors are replaced, the charge is transferred back to them.

Shocking and mysterious
Mike from Sandia Park, NM
One of the favorites of my 5th grade students is to charge this separable Leyden Jar (with a Wimshurst machine) then carefully disassemble it and find that none of the parts will shock - where did the energy go? - then put it back together and produce a shock. Really exciting.
