Aragonite is a carbonate mineral, one of the common and naturally-occurring forms of calcium carbonate, which means that it is related to the ubiquitous calcite, though its crystal lattice differs significantly from that of calcite, yielding a starkly different appearance to that mineral.  Aragonite is formed via biological and physical processes, including precipitation from freshwater and marine environments.  In the United States, aragonite is generally associated with the magnificent stalactite formations found in Carlsbad Caverns, but the mineral was first identified in Spain, and there are significant sources located in Slovakia, as well as the Bahamas.  Aragonite is known to form naturally in nearly all mollusk, and as the calcareous endoskeleton of warm and cold water corals.  Aragonite also forms in the ocean and caves as inorganic precipitates called marine cements and speleothems, respectively.  In aquaria, aragonite is essential for the replication of reef conditions. Aragonite provides the materials necessary for much sea life and also maintains the pH of the water close to its natural level, to prevent the dissolution of biogenic calcium carbonate.  Aragonite has been successfully tested for the removal of pollutants like zinc, cobalt and lead from contaminated wastewaters; all in all, aragonite is one of the most versatile and essential of minerals for geological formations, marine life, and perhaps even for reduction of pollution.  This excellent specimen makes a great addition to any earth science classroom for decoration, or for inclusion in a rock or mineral collection.
