Stag beetles are from the group Lucanidae. About 1200 known species exist on the earth today. The name “stag beetle” refers to the large, distinctive mandibles on the males of many stag beetle species, which look similar to the antlers of stags (or deer). Normally they are not aggressive towards humans, even though they can look pretty frightening! Males will use their jaws to wrestle with each other for a mating site. This specimen is a great asset for any science lesson.
