This fun, portable magnetic linear accelerator (also called the Gauss accelerator or just the magnetic accelerator) is a device that uses the conversion of magnetic (potential) energy into kinetic energy to launch a metal ball with high velocity.
It consists of an 8 inch (20cm) track (in the shape of a space shuttle), four fixed super-strong Neodymium magnets, and 11 mm steel balls. Once the trigger ball is released on one end of the track, it accelerates towards the first fixed magnet (and gains speed and kinetic energy.) Once it hits the magnet, the collision causes the second steel ball on the other side of the magnet to get dislodged and accelerate towards the second magnet. This then repeats three more times at the next three magnets on the track. Ultimately the final steel ball fires off with high speed at the other end of the track.
This product is a great tool for demonstrating collisions and the conversion of energy from magnetic potential energy to kinetic energy in a fun and interactive way.

WARNING: This item is not designed for kids to use without parental supervision. Steel balls will fire off with high velocity and can be dangerous. Only use this with protective goggles eyewear and do not aim the accelerator at persons or animals.
