This six-inch (15cm) tall Galileo thermometer is just the right size for your office or classroom desk. It is made of beautiful, hand-blown glass and gold-plated temperature tags. It includes four temperature balls (64, 68, 72, and 76 degrees Fahrenheit.)
The Galileo Thermometer is an intelligent temperature reading device that every science geek needs. It is a sealed glass cylinder that contains clear liquid and glass bulbs that are all different densities. As the temperature changes, the balls rise and fall, giving you a temperature reading.
This thermometer works on the principle that the density of a liquid changes as the temperature varies. Each of the glass balls is accurately weighted by partially filling them with liquid. When the temperature rises, the liquid in the glass cylinder becomes less dense, and the balls sink slowly to the bottom.
The temperature is read from the engraved metal discs that hang off each bulb – if a bulb is floating in the middle, that is the current temperature, or if some are at the top and some at the bottom the temperature will between the bulbs on either side of the gap.
