This is a very clever toy. It has all the parts that comprise a real electric motor and illustrate the principles in a very direct way. However, I can see someone who does not understand the critical parts of the construction not taking enough care. As a result, it will not work. A clear explanation of how the constant and intermittent magnetic fields cause the rotation would be helpful and help the builder to be extra careful in stripping the insulation off only one side of the wire. The instructions do tell you to do this, but not why.
A good instructive electro-magnetism project

These simple motors can be built by students with about 30 to 40 minutes effort. They learn about magnetism, electricity and mechanics in one project. About half the student teams of two or three get their motors running and the others are motivated by this success to complete the project. Only a few coils end up hopelessly scrambled so have some spare wire on hand. You also need an exacto knife and/or sandpaper to complete this project. Different levels of students require more or less step-by-step instruction. Instructions included are quite good.
