Newton’s cradle or balance balls is one of the oldest, most interesting physics toys that demonstrate the laws of conservation of energy and momentum (and much more). You just raise one, two or three balls on one end, let them go and watch what happens on the other side. Great for physics demonstrations of conservation of momentum or as a desk toy/stress reducer, and makes a great gift.

This is the best quality Newton's cradle available on the market! It has a stylish black solid wood base and high-shine chrome metal posts and 22mm solid metal balls. Great addition to any desk!

Features:

  • Demonstrates primarily the laws of conservation of energy and momentum
  • Excellent desk toy
  • Perfect for physics demonstrations
  • Cradle size: 7.00in x 7.00in x 4.75in
  • Black wood base
  • Chrome metal balls (22mm diameter)

Note: This product is not meant for young children. It is a delicate object, meant for use as a desk toy or fun stress reducer. Balls on cradle can get entangled or snap off if not used properly.

Newton's Cradle History

What we call Newton's Cradle today could have been also called Huygens' Cradle or Mariotte's Cradle.

All three physicists seem to have been studying pendulums and collisions in the late 1600 and early 1700. Dutch physicist Christiaan Huygens published (posthumously in 1703) De Motu Corporum ex Percussione (On the Motion of Bodies by Collision) where he discusses his experiments with two pendulum balls of equal mass and the motion being transfered from one ball to another. Around the same time French physicist Abbé Mariotte experiments with 'impacts' - collisions between bodies and comes up with a version of the law later acknowledged by Newton in his Principia. Isaac Newton later comes up with Laws of Motion and gets all the credit.

There is much confusion over the origins of the modern Newton's cradle. Marius J. Morin has been credited as being the first to name and make this popular executive toy. However, in early 1967, an English actor, Simon Prebble, coined the name "Newton's cradle" for the wooden version manufactured by his company, Scientific Demonstrations Ltd. After some initial resistance from retailers, they were first sold by Harrods of London, thus creating the start of an enduring market for executive toys.

Amazing quality. Far beyond my expectations. I had researched for a month before buying the product. I can guarantee you won't get a better product. Thanks xump ??

3 star rating  Decent but not as reviewed by others.
Travis from Phoenix, AZ
This is a fairly nice Newtons Cradle but by no means does it go any longer than 30 seconds or so. I was expecting better for the price in comparison to others.

5 star rating  Super
Nicole from Seattle, WA
My son has wanted one of these for years, and he's delighted with this item. There are small gaps between the balls, so they do wobble a little, but not much. As a result, it goes for quite a while, and makes a very satisfying clicking sound.

I bought it for my 86 year old mom who had told me she had always wanted one. She had seen them in catalogs. It came assembled, and it is awesome. She loves it! Perfect condition, quick service!

I was looking for Newtons Cradle but not one of those cheap plastic ones. This one is such quality and looks really nice sitting right in our living room. There is nothing cheap about it. The customer service is excellent also.

5 star rating  The Amazing Newton's Cradle
Susan from Little Rock, Arkansas
My 15 year old grandson has been fascinated by the Newtons Cradle ever since his science teacher introduced it to his class, so he put it on his Christmas List. I read the reviews on Amazon and was less than impressed. I found my way to xUmp to find 5 star reviews and we were not disappointed. He took it out of the box and immediately demonstrated it for us. He was thrilled and it worked perfectly!

Got this for my 19 year old brother who has always wanted one. He loved it so much when he opened it this morning, and it worked really well! My whole family stood around and watched in awe. Great product!

5 star rating  Great Quality!
Lisa from Maryland
After reading many reviews, I decided to order this Newton's Cradle based on all the positive reviews. However, I was still nervous about how the quality would be. Suffice it to say, this one is excellent! The balls are heavy metal and they touch each other (no gaps), and the strings weren't tangled. My son is going to love it for Christmas. (Be careful when removing the styrofoam packaging material to make sure you don't tangle the strings yourself.)

Does what I got it for (to give as a present). Displays the results of simultaneously satisfying the Law of Conservation of Energy and That of the Conservation of Momentum.

I am perfectly satisfied with this product. I am glad that I had read a warning online about unpacking it carefully. Filaments may get caught on some styrofoam packing material. Be careful and you will have lots of enjoyment from this well-made product

way better than those terrible ones on amazon that cost just as much as this one

Bookseller Guy from St. Paul, MN
Looks good on my desk. Balls are level and it works. It's not super solid so the balls lose their momentum relatively soon. Overall for the price it's really good. Kids love it too.

Michael W. Beattie from USA Milwaukee, Wisconsin
I have always thought that this was a great desk top item.

5 star rating  Excellent Product
Ken R from Des Moines, IA
Found this after a long internet search of smaller, cheaply made products. The weight of the balls is what's needed for this to work correctly. My 9 year old granddaughter loved it!

Used in a science class to demonstrate Newton's Laws of Motion and the Conservation of Momentum. The students were endlessly fascinated by it and came up with some creative combinations. Product is delicate though, watch youngsters carefully.
