Pyrite has the nickname "fool’s gold" on account of the fact that the brassy yellow color and chunky appearance have fooled a lot of prospectors looking for gold. Pyrite is a brittle, metallic mineral and is more than 50% sulfur in composition. The surface of pyrite is often grainy, although naturally-formed cubes taken directly limestone, are also common, as well as high-quality, faceted samples such as this one. Traditional pyrite samples such as one might find at amusement parks are typically of a rough appearance, and look very similar to simple rocks in shape and texture. This sample features an abundance of detailed, raised geometric shapes emerging from the surface of the mineral. Excellent for display or observation in the classroom and makes for a wonderful home or office decoration!
