Orthoceras is a cephalopod that first appeared approximately 500 millions years ago, and then became extinct approximately 385 million years ago. The name means "straight horn", referring to it’s characteristic of a long, straight, conical shell. The preserved shell is all that remains of this ancestor of our modern-day squid. These amazing bookends are actual orthoceras fossils encased in fossilized rock that have been cut and polished for your bookshelf use. Just put books between each end to both hold books in place and accent your normally drab bookshelf with an original and natural piece of art. The orthoceras can be clearly seen, and you can also see glimpses of other fossil remains in the polished rock. This is a unique gift that is both scientific and stunning in form. We highly recommend this item for Christmas gifts, or as a gift for your boss!
