While the “praying mantis” may appear to be a peaceful insect due to its name, it’s actually a formidable hunter, and it’s known to even eat its own kind! They usually eat insects such as flies and aphids, but larger species have been known to eat small lizards, frogs, birds, snakes, or even rodents!! Most are ambush predators, meaning they wait until their prey comes near, and then they capture them at an amazing speed! Masters of camouflage, some species not only blend with their surroundings, but can even mimic the leaf, branch or stick they’re sitting on. Usually protected through just their concealment abilities, they will often stand tall and spread their forelegs, with their wings fanning out wide. This makes it seem large and threatening to potential predators.

This great specimen of a REAL mantis is mounted in a clear acrylic block, allowing one to view this mantis up close and personal! Great for looking at details under a microscope, or for having in the classroom, this is a great educational resource for the young science student or for the serious entomologist!

This was a gift for my grandson who has a collection of these insect specimens. This is one of the largest specimens I have been able to find for him. We make up teaching tasks between the specimens and insect books we have bought him.

I sent this to my grandson. He has a large collection of "BUGS". He loved this thing! It is the largest specimen he has so far.
