This is a genuine fossil of a Mosasaurus dinosaur tooth; this creature lived during the Cretaceous Period (65-144 million years ago), and was part of a genus of extinct, carnivorous, aquatic lizards, and it was contemporaneous with many of the dinosaurs that we're familiar with today. It preyed on fish, turtles, ammonites, smaller mosasaurs, birds, pterosaurs, and plesiosaurs, the latter of which is another aquatic lizard from the period. It looked not disimilar from the whales of our own day, but its build was considerably smaller.
This particular specimen is mounted and encased in a rock matrix, making it perfect for classroom display and discussion, and allows students a hands-on biological and paleontological experience. Have them pass the tooth around, then perhaps imagine via drawing what the creature that it belonged to looked like! Also makes a great gift for biology or geology students or teachers.
