Perform a timeless scientific experiment, one of the foundational diagnostic methods of microbiology, by using agar and petri dishes to grow your own bacterial cultures! A culture is a method of allowing microbial organisms to multiply by letting them reproduce under controlled laboratory conditions. The petri dish is partially filled with warm liquid agar with a particular mix of nutrients, salts and amino acids (and sometimes antibiotics). After the agar hardens, the dish is ready to receive a microbe-laden sample. Empty petri dishes can also be used to observe plant germination or small animal behavior.
