Quartz is the most common mineral on Earth. It has a hard glassy surface and occurs in many shapes and colors. Clear quartz is found in masses, in clusters or aspoints, which are pieces of clusters. Quartz generates an electrical charge and has many scientific, industrial and metaphysical uses. Quartz can manifest in a huge variety of different forms, each with its own color. This particular specimen is an example of smoky quartz, which is a is a grey, translucent variety of quartz. It ranges in clarity from almost complete transparency to a brownish-gray crystal that is practically opaque. Some can also be black. Like other quartz gems, it is a silicon dioxide crystal. The smoky colour results from free silicon, formed from the silicon dioxide by natural irradiation. This beautiful example of smoky quartz is a must for comprehensive personal rock and mineral collections or for the classroom, and constitutes a unique decoration for the home or office.
